the law

The current UK law states that for every tyre on your vehicle that doesn't meet the minimum tread depth you can receive 3 penalty points on your driving licence and up to a £2500 fine.

This means that if all 4 tyres on your car were illegal you could receive 12 points and a £10000 fine.

THE PENALTIES ARE PER TYRE!!!!!

CHECKING YOUR TYRES

Being the helpful guys that we are we have set out a rough guide so that you can avoid any unnecessary fines/points as well as keep you as safe as possible.

Remember your car tyres are your vehicles only point of contact with the road so they need to be in good condition to keep you and your family safe.

1. Your car tyres need to legally be a minimum of 1.6mm but it's advisable to change them below 3mm as this is when stopping distances can start to be hugely impacted.

2.Tyres should be free from any defects ie side bulges, side chunks missing from kerbing.

3.Tyres should be in good overall condition and not dried out with heavy cracking as this can lead to leaks/deflated tyres which could result in severe consequences if issues arise whilst driving.

You can check your own tyres tread depth using the indicatior bars found in the tread please see images oppsite/below(circled), these indicators are set at the legal limit of 1.6mm.
